As we know, the sources of economic shocks are either inherently related to the economy (e.g. most stock market crashes, the subprime crisis over a decade ago) or completely external to it (e.g. a pandemic). Of course, any shock is a challenge, although the latter type is usually more surprising and thus much more difficult to manage. However, under all circumstances and whatever the nature of the difficulties, the flexibility of a modern, competitive and strong economy, including its adaptability, is admirable and a cause for optimism.

Nearly 2 years ago, we all felt that the pandemic had suddenly put the entire global economy on hold. Today, we see that the coronavirus has accelerated the world even more.

Poland’s digital economy has grown by more than 7 per cent over the past three years, according to an analysis by McKinsey & Company. This continues a trend we first identified in 2016, when we calculated the value of the digital economy to be EUR 26.3 billion, and later in 2019, by which time it had already grown to EUR 32.7 billion.

The winners will be those who are not only able to skilfully adapt to the new conditions, but also use them to build a competitive advantage. This is not a new challenge for Polish business and industry. We have acquired adaptive abilities during the economic transformation. And in the last decade, we’ve probably used this experience more than we think.
